“Tibet’s Relations with the Himalaya” – third in the series, concluded at Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, on 27th October, 2013. The objective of this series was to explore in some depth the political and socio-cultural affinity amongst various communities and nationalities of the Himalaya with Tibet, both in time and space.
The Vice-Chancellor of the Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, Prof. Tamo Mibang, participated at the opening session. In his remarks he said that the ongoing series are highly relevant for the people living in the Himalayan belts. He further said that the people of Arunachal Pradesh claim their ancestral origin from Lhasa in Tibet, who later migrated south along the Siang river valley. Referring to tribal folklores he indicated that there is no mention of China but Tibet has been often cited, which clearly signifies the close connections of Arunachal Pradesh with Tibet.
Twenty scholars including those from the Rajiv Gandhi University presented papers on different aspects of Himalaya studies: Tibet’s Relations with Tawang: A Factor for Chinese Claim and People’s Perception on it; Trans -Himalayan Cultural Linkages: India-Nepal-China; Border Trade through NathuLa: Reviving and Rebuilding the Historical Trade linkages; Current Relations between the Himalayan region and Tibetan people, etc.
Papers presented will be published in due course as soon as these are adequately illustrated and edited. These will be made available on the FNVA’s website for download.
