As it steps up its ambitions in outer space, China is assembling the world’s largest radio telescope that will have a dish the size of 30 football pitches when completed.
The 500-metre Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope snuggles in a valley surrounded by hills in southwestern Guizhou province, images posted online suggest.
Scientists are attaching 4,450 triangular-shaped panels to the reflector of the telescope on 23 July. The telescope will apparently overtake the Arecibo Observatory in the Uniteds States territory of Puerto Rico, which is 305 metre or 1,000 feet in diameter.
