DHARAMSHALA, November 6: The Delhi police quarantined Samyeling Tibetan settlement or Majnu Ka Tilla on Friday morning to avoid any protest against the visiting Chinese Vice President in Delhi.
Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao, on a five-day tour, met India’s Vice President Hamid Ansari and signed Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) in the field of water resources and culture. Li, who arrived in Delhi from Kolkata on Friday, will also meet the President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to an eyewitness, over 40 police arrived at Majnu Tilla at around 9-10 AM and were strategically placed in order to quarantine the area.
“A group of three-four policemen were placed at a distance of few yards from each other and they stayed till afternoon,” said Kunga Yonten, a resident of the area.
Tenzin Wangchuk of Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) confirmed that ‘no protest was organized’ and there were not much trouble with the security deployed.
TYC on Thursday in their press release urged the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confront Li on the Tibet issue.
“While we recognize that this meeting is a great opportunity for India and China to push for progress, we strongly urge for Tibet to be a part of the agenda. Indian leaders need to take a proactive approach and not brush aside the issue of Tibet,” Tenzing Jigme, President of TYC said in the release.
“We believe that a lasting peace and security for India lies only in a free Tibet. A Tibet without China’s military presence is the only assurance you can have of an India free from constant Chinese incursions as well as ludicrous claims on the borders.”
