AGP writes to PM on Brahmaputra diversion

Summary: GUWAHATI: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Union ministers, urging them to take up the issue of dam on the Brahmaputra with China. But China has been constructing mega dams, water reservoirs and canals on the Brahmaputra diverting its water for power projects. The AGP leaders are also planning to visit New Delhi to personally request the PM and other ministers regarding this issue. In a letter addressed to external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, Union minister for water resources, river development and Ganga, Union minister for environment, forest and climate and the Prime Minister on December 11, the AGP leadership has urged the Centre to take up the issue of diversion of Brahmaputra with China. These have made the future of our people bleak,” said AGP vice-president Dilip Kumar Saikia.

The AGP leaders are also planning to visit New Delhi to personally request the PM and other ministers regarding this issue.

They said this is a serious issue which should be raised by all, leaving aside political interests. “This is about our future and existence. All of us should raise this issue. I would like to request our PM to take up the matter with the Chinese government.
