Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday made an appeal to the Central Government to take seriously the issue of approval accorded to the authorities concerned by the Chinese Government for taking up construction of three hydel projects on the Tibetan part of the Brahmaputra, stated an official press release.
The issue should be taken up with the Chinese Government in right earnest and an agreement with the neighbouring country should also be signed so that the neighbouring country does not take any such unilateral decision on these Tibetan hydel projects that may have negative impacts on the Northeastern part of India. If the situation so demands, the Central Government may raise the issue on the floor of the United Nations too, he said.
He alleged that despite the repeated pleas made by the State Government, the Narendra Modi-led Government at the Centre has not attached importance to the issue. The Prime Minister did not raise the issue with the Chinese authorities during his latest visit to China, even though the State Government sent a letter to the Central Government urging for taking up the issue with the appropriate authorities in the neighbouring country.
The Chinese hydel projects will have adverse impact on Assam and other Northeastern States. Especially, they will pose serious threats to the economy of Assam. These hydel projects will also have adverse impact also on the ecological equilibrium of the region. The Act East Policy of the Central Government will also face the negative impact of the Chinese hydel projects, said the Chief Minister.
