Prologue:

The recent film ‘Evolution of Tibetan Democracy in Exile’ showed how deep the ties between Tibet and India run across these two great civilizations. In the film, His Holiness the Dalai Lama recalls how he experienced his tryst with democracy when he visited India in 1956. He saw the Indian Parliament in New Delhi and observed the democratic system including the freedom of speech in person. Reflecting on this, during the latest winter session of the parliament, on 16th December 2024, Shri Tapir Gao, a member of parliament from the state of Arunachal Pradesh laid before the parliament, the need to recognise the Institution of the Dalai Lama and how Beijing already has plans in place for his succession/reincarnation of the 15th Dalai Lama. The fact that Tibet and the Dalai Lama which is a sensitive subject for New Delhi, are being highlighted on such a significant political platform underscores the goodwill, understanding and continued significance of Tibet to India.

It is interesting to note the Indian Parliament was among the first legislative bodies to deliberate and raise the issue of Tibet in their halls when China under the Communist regime began illegally occupying it since its establishment as the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from 1949 onwards. Recently from 25th November onwards, I had the privilege of engaging on Tibet with several members of the Indian Parliament through the Tibet Advocacy Alliance – India. This engagement culminated in the seminar on China’s Colonial Boarding Schools in Tibet: Reshaping Social and Cultural Landscape by Dr. Gyal Lo on 29th November, who has first-hand experience on this subject as he studied and taught in Tibet.

In this episode we engage with Tashi Nyima la. He is the co-founder of Khadhok Arts, alongside his colleagues Tenzin Melak and Lea Taake. This Tibetan arts collective was established in 2023 with the goal of nurturing Tibetan artists and providing them with a much-needed platform to showcase their work. US President Joe Biden recently welcomed US President-elect Donald Trump to the White House, and his recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Lima provided further insight into the evolving dynamics between the US and China. During their conversation, Biden recalled, “I remember being on the Tibetan Plateau with you, and I remember being in Beijing.” This remark suggests a subtle positioning on US-China relations, particularly in regard to Tibet, signaling how Tibet will be discussed. The full impact of these dynamics on Tibet and the role of Trump 2.0 will become clearer each passing day. Let us know try to understand and see potential possibilities based on trends and events that have occurred and have been laid in the public.

Prologue:
On 6th November, the world stood in anticipation of the results of the 2024 US Presidential elections. The results were announced and Donald Trump emerged victorious, he not only secured the necessary electoral college votes, but won all the 7 swing states and also the popular mandate (which he did not secure during his 1st term) as the 47th President-elect of the United States of America. His opponent, Kamala Harris conceded the election and even incumbent US President Joe Biden congratulated Trump on his victory, showing to us all the essence of democracy. The leaders from the two most populous nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and President Xi Jinping of China, extended their congratulations. The Central Tibetan Administration and His Holiness the Dalai Lama also congratulated and wished him well. There was an unanimous peak in following of US politics surrounding this election around the world, underscoring the crucial and pivotal that the US continues to have in global affairs.

Hence, it is no surprise that the question in the mind of many is how Trump 2.0 might impact their own country, people and community. Many have debated extensively on that besides the American electorate and this debate even percolated among the Tibetan community with differing views generated during the election phase. Tibetans who have acquired US citizenship legally have the right to vote and there were small public campaigns within the community to support either of the two presidential candidates be it Donald Trump or Kamala Harris. Furthermore, this engagement also touched the House of Representatives where Tibetans were supporting those candidates who had and continue to support the Tibetan freedom movement, Rep. Jim McGovern being a notable one here.

Prologue:
During the recently concluded 8th session of the 17th Tibetan Parliament in Exile (TPiE) in Dharamshala, one could witness the democratic legacy that His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetan leadership have established. This stands in stark contrast to the situation in Tibet, which has been occupied by the People’s Republic of China since the forceful signing of the now-repudiated 17th Point Agreement between Tibet and China.

What is the Central Tibetan Administration?
The democratic legacy I am referring to here is the establishment of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), popularly known as the Tibetan Government in Exile, in April 1959, which is currently based in Dharamshala. This government in exile was set up by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people and serves as the legitimate representative of Tibetans worldwide. It has been tasked with a) restoring freedom for Tibetans and b) rehabilitating Tibetan refugees.

The reading of this book was initially inspired and suggested by the trustees at FNVA, when I had to study and learn more about Tibetan Muslims in preparation of my FNVA’s Unsilenced: Voices of Young Tibetans podcast. Eventually what was intended as a reading material turned out into an inspiration and budding reverence of my own Tibetan heritage. I cannot recommend this book enough to readers, which was in its initial edition read and translated in English under the title ‘Islam in Tibet: Tibetan Caravans’, in understanding Tibet and its age-old relationship with the Himalayas. As a Tibetan whose family, like thousands of other Tibetans had been forced to flee Tibet due to unrestricted violence and mass killing of Tibetans by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), my tryst with Tibet began from their stories.  ‘Click enter on the dialog box below for the entire book review.’

Conversation with Nangsel Sherpa La

Hosted by Tenzing Dhamdul, FNVA

In this episode Nangsel Sherpa shares her research on “Migration, Gender, Religion, and Tibetan Identity” whereby she examines Tibetan identity through a nuanced lens of intersectionality and subaltern perspectives. Her work delves into how migration, gender, and religious identity shape the Tibetan experience, particularly in the context of the People’s Republic of China’s occupation of Tibet. Sherpa’s insights are valuable in understanding the multifaceted nature of Tibetan identity, especially as it intersects with issues of gender and migration.

In the session she highlights how Tibetan women, despite being marginalized within broader narratives, played significant roles in resisting occupation and preserving Tibetan culture and identity. By foregrounding their experiences, she challenges dominant historical narratives that often sideline women’s contributions. She further points out that Tibetan identity is not monolithic and that those with non-Buddhist backgrounds, or those who do not fit neatly into mainstream Tibetan categories, are equally important in the Tibetan freedom movement. Her own family history serves as a testament to the diverse and rich tapestry of Tibetan experiences, underscoring that the struggle for Tibetan freedom and identity is not confined to a single narrative or religious tradition.

Her concluding remarks, “I hope we Tibetans can really have a country we can call our home someday,” reflect a deep-seated hope and longing for a future where Tibetans can reclaim their homeland and identity. This statement encapsulates the core aspiration of the Tibetans worldwide including the majority of whom continue to live under Beijing’s occupation.
