China’s first private mountain museum opens in Tibet

The China’s first private mountain museum-Tsering Chey Nga Mountain Museum has recently finished construction and been opened to public in Lhasa, capital of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, Xinhua reported.

“Tsering Chey Nga” means “Five mothers of good fortune and long life” in Tibetan and refers to the five mountains of Himalayas, among which there is the world’s highest mountain-Mt. Qomolangma.

The museum, covering an area of 5,000 square meters, is divided into various sections, such as nature hall, culture hall, human mountaineering spirit hall, and an experiential area including rock climbing, rope climbing and a simulation of climbing on Mount Qomolangma. The museum has a dedicated mountaineering library where climbers can read, study, and learn about Tibet’s mountains and mountain culture.

Nyima Tsering, curator of the museum, said that art displays in the museum, including oil paintings, wash paintings, and traditional Tibetan Thangka, will focus on the theme of the mountains. Also on display will be a collection of Tibetan folk cultural treasures, mountaineering equipments from various time periods, and specimens of different plants and animals that live in the high altitude mountain areas of Tibet.

“Tibetans and the mountains are closely linked, so by creating a ‘Mountain World’, we can let the world know about Tibetan mountain culture,” said Nyima Tsering.
