China has sent 49 police liaison officers to Chinese embassies and consulates in 27 countries to help track down fugitives and handle emergencies, said the Ministry of Public Security on Sunday.

Police liaison officers were first dispatched to the Chinese embassy in the United States in 1998 and have played an active role since then, said the ministry. Thirteen more officers will be sent to four countries in 2015.

Apart from their traditional roles such as safeguarding national security and ensuring the safety of overseas Chinese, these officers fully participated in Fox Hunt 2014, China’s worldwide campaign against corrupt officials. They played a role in the repatriation of more than 200 fugitives, said the ministry.

Vice minister Meng Hongwei said the ministry will further improve police liaison officer work to boost international law enforcement cooperation.
