Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli said on Monday that China will continue to advance green development and endeavor to build a beautiful country.

Zhang made the remarks in a speech at the opening ceremony of the annual general meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development.

Zhang said China places great importance on protecting the environment and has adopted a strategy of sustainable growth.

He pointed out that China will lift environmental thresholds for enterprises by encouraging the growth of energy-efficient and environment-friendly industries and curbing industries with high emissions and low energy efficiency.

Zhang said China will deepen reform and innovation in environmental protection by letting the market play a greater role. He said China will accelerate reform in resource pricing, expand the market for environmental technology and services, and encourage more companies to focus on pollution control.

He said China will accelerate legislation on environmental protection and earnestly implement the newly amended Environment Protection Law.

Zhang said China will focus on curbing air, water and soil pollution and designate a “bottom line” for various local governments in protecting the environment.

Zhang said China will encourage the public to participate and supervise the government’s effort to protect the environment.

Zhang said the Chinese government will support the growth of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, which has served as an important platform for exchanges between China and the outside world on green development.
