The Senior Engineers’ Forum of Greater Guwahati (SEFGG) has expressed concern over the reports of diversion of the Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo) river by China. It has also expressed its dismay over the incidents of stiff opposition to the efforts at harnessing the hydel potential of the NE region. The NE region of the country has 35 per cent to 40 per cent hydel potential.

The forum said in a statement here today that though Assam is plagued by problems of perennial flood and erosion and hydel power is core to developmental activities, some sort of stalemate condition has been created in the area of hydel power generation and water resources utilisation in the region. It is felt that community participation in this area is the need of the hour and all popular apprehensions on the utilisation of water resources for developmental purposes should be allayed, it said.

Taking this view into consideration, the forum is organising a panel discussion on the impact of impounding water of rivers of the region on December 5 at the NEDFi House here, said the forum in its statement.
