On Nov 1 morning, just when the writer entered the Building Number 1 of the Xinjiang University, he could hear people talking in Uighur language. This sound was from the cadres of Xinjiang Military Region Political Department and national defence students of Xinjiang University being trained in Uighur language.

This is the first time since the establishment of Xinjiang University that the troops have come together to get training in a language spoken by ethnic minorities and is also the first time that the PLA national defence students are getting special training in Uighur language.

In a training period of one and a half years, the listening and spoken abilities of the cadres will be developed. After the training, the cadres will have a good grasp of the everyday spoken language, 500 sentences needed for working with the masses and a vocabulary of 2500 words. The aim is to make these students more suited for working in Xinjiang and to improve their ability of serving the masses.

“After attending a few classes, I have basically learnt the peculiar pronunciation of the Uighur language and I can now read the alphabets. I am also able to read out some easy words now. By learning the language, we have come closer to the Uighur students. I feel that learning the Uighur language will not only make us more skilled but will also bring us closer to the Uighur students” said a national defence student studying the University.
