With China planning to develop a tourist hub in Tibet, India said on Thursday that it was paying “special attention” to the development of infrastructure in border areas.

“The government is aware that China is developing the infrastructure in the border regions opposite India in Tibet and XinjiangAutonomous Region,” Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed told the RajyaSabha.

He was alluding to China’s building of the Qinghai-Tibetrailway line, with proposed extensions up to Xigaze and Nyingchi, and the development of road and airport facilities.

The so-called golden tourist complex is located close to the disputed areas on the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh, India’s northeastern state over which Beijing claims sovereignty.

The government is giving careful and special attention to the development of infrastructure in the border areas opposite China in order to meet strategic and security agreements and to facilitate economic development of these areas, said Ahamed.

The government keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on India’s security and takes all necessary measures to safeguard it, he added.
