India is seeking to include Tibet’s capital Lhasa in a cultural extravaganza meant to mark 2014 as the “Year of Friendship and Exchange for India and China,” reported IANS news service Feb 4. The two-month festival, being organized by India’s ministry of culture, will be held at eight venues in the People’s Republic of China and will kick off in April this year.
The report said that with an aim to foster strong cultural ties between the two countries, India will present to the people of China folk performances, literature and classical dance.
The report said Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong were already among four cities cleared by the Chinese government for holding the festival. It cited V Srinivas, joint secretary in India’s culture ministry, as saying Lhasa was among the remaining four cities in which the festival was being sought to be held.
India’s ministry of culture is holding a series of “Festival of India” in several other countries as well, including a few South Asian countries in March, South Africa in April, and South Korea and Japan in October, the report added.
