According to the Agricultural and Pastoral Bureau of Lhasa, the city plans to introduce five varieties of vegetables (green pepper, cauliflower, cabbage, pumpkin and green bean). Besides, Lhasa will also introduce wine grape. Theses vegetables are cold-resistant and are planned to be sown in the field on May.

In recent years, thanks to widely spread of vegetable protecting technology, vegetable yield is increasing year by year in Lhasa, capital of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. During the peak season of production, Lhasa is self-sufficient in vegetable, lifting Lhasa out of the state of depending on hinterland vegetable supply. According to data, Lhasa’s vegetable growing area reaches 70,500 mu (4,700 hectares), generating 280,000 tons of vegetables, which meets the demand of citizens in Lhasa. Besides, with an annual output of 150,000 tons, greenhouse vegetables cover an area of 17,700 mu (1,180 hectares), accounting for 25 percent of the whole vegetable planting area in Lhasa.

It is reported from vegetable and fruit market in Lhasa that every day, the market can supply 300 tons’ vegetables and 100 tons’ fruits. In summer, more than 85 percent of vegetables are self-sufficient. In winter, the supply of vegetables produced in Lhasa reaches only 50 percent. Although Lhasa develops greenhouse vegetables in recent years, with the rapid process of urbanization and the growth of urban population, the demand for vegetables and fruits is increasing. Therefore, every year, Lhasa introduces new varieties and promotes actively in order to satisfy the demand of citizens.
