The scheduled visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to China next month has raised hopes among Tibetan community in Bylakuppe of some kind of steps to end human rights violations in Tibet.
The Tibetan community in Bylakuppe has sent a memorandum to Modi on Tibetan National Uprising Day and human rights violations in Tibet. They made an appeal to Modi to prevail upon China to hold talks with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile to resolve the issue.
As many as 20,000 Tibetans in the Bylakuppe settlement and around 1.2 lakh Tibetans spread across the country and abroad are hopeful that Modi will try to solve it.
“We are happy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is more aware of the Tibetan issue. He has interacted with the Dalai Lama too,” said Lhakyab, president of Tibetan Youth Congress, Bylakuppe.
Dawat of Bylakuppe settlement said they have high expectations on the Modi’s visit and are confident that something positive will emerge on the Tibetan issue. He said there have been 138 reported self-immolations in Tibet since 2009 during the freedom struggle.
Meanwhile, Tibetans in Bylakuppe settlement will organise a cultural programme on Wednesday to mark the entry of the Dalai Lama on the Indian soil.
