A proposal for revamping and rechristening of the Brahmaputra Board into North-East and Brahmaputra River Rejuvenation Authority is under active consideration of the Ministry of Water Resources, Government told Rajya Sabha today.

In his written reply, Minister of State for Water Resources Sanwar Lal Jat said the bill has been circulated to the states in the northeast region for their views and suggestions.

The Brahmaputra Board, an autonomous statutory body, was set up under the ‘The Brahmaputra Board Act 1980’ for planning and integrated implementation of measures for the control of floods and bank erosion in the Brahmaputra Valley.

The main function of the board is to prepare master plans for controlling floods, bank erosion and improvement of drainage in the Brahmaputra Valley, the minister added.

Responding to another question, the minister said the Centre has taken up pollution abatement works through National River Conservation Plan and National Ganga River Basin Authority programmes in polluted stretches of 42 rivers including Ganga and its tributaries in 199 towns spread over 21 states.
