Conversation with Lhagyari Namgyal Dolkar

The session with Lhagyari Namgyal Dolkar, member of the 17th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile moved from recent significant developments when it comes to official governmental support to Tibet be it from India and the US. Lhagyari expressed her gratitude to Congressman Rep.Jim McGovern and Rep. Michael McCaul for introducing a new bill on Tibet ‘Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Conflict Act’. Shepraised the revival of the All-Party India Parliamentary Forum for Tibet (APIPFT)simultaneously relaying to us how India can and must do more for Tibet and the Tibetans as helping Tibetans would lead to a solution to the constant border skirmishes that have now escalated with China on India’s Northern and North-Eastern frontiers.

With 30th August marked as the United Nations International Day of (Victims of Enforced) Disappearance, Lhagyari elaborated and emphasised the situation in Tibet, highlighting the kidnapping of the 11th Panchen Lama along with the several empowered Tibetans who raise their voice and express themselves in China occupied Tibet.

She also shared her upbringing and how in the exile Tibetan community there was no exception but rather a strong sense of oneness and uniformity. She noted this with her experience in the Tibetan Children Village (TCV) school, where students wore the same uniform regardless of their economic, social and political standing. The importance and significance of Tibetan democracy was also spotlighted here.

When it comes to Tibet and Tibetans in the coming years, especially in light of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama who grows wiser and bigger in number each passing day there is an elephant in the room. Lhagyari, called on a positive outlook on it, detailing how the octogenarian Tibetan leader has been preparing for this eventuality since his forced exile to India. She further elaborated how Tibetans have been empowered under the leadership of the His Holiness the Dalai Lama and that we should now take the mantle of leadership instead of shying away from it.

Finally, her message to her dear Tibetan brothers, sisters, Tibetan support groups and individuals was of sheer gratitude towards them and wants us to be united be it with the East Turkistan, Southern Mongolia, Taiwan, Hong Kongers (those under the Chinese communist regime and occupation).
